Hello Aaron How are you? How is this industry treating you? Hi, I’m so delighted to be a part of this Makeup Extravaganza issue! This industry has been so welcoming to me. I thrive in a creative environment, and love being surrounded by like-minded people that I gain inspiration from. I have learned so much, and look forward to seeing my career progress. We are glad to have you featured and very excited for makeup geeks worldwide. So tell all of the makeup artist out there what your secret is? How do you create such magical art? I’d say I’m most known for creating very soft looks. Even my dramatic looks have a soft feel to them. My secret to that is layering. I have a background in watercolor painting, and I definitely apply that to each makeup that I do. In watercolor, you build sheer layers of color to create depth and dimension. This is how I approach each makeup. Building sheer layers to create my desired intensity. This gives an overall soft effect, even on the most dramatic of looks. My favorite part of every makeup is creating beautiful healthy looking skin. Anyone who knows me personally knows that I am OBSESSED with concealer. My current favorite is NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer. I can’t have enough of them! If you can perfect your concealing technique, then you can allow as much of the subject’s skin to show through as possible. The golden rule is to apply foundation as sheer as possible, so long as you get the necessary coverage. This is why perfecting your concealing is so important. It does not take talent or skill to pile full-coverage makeup on everyone that sits in your chair. How does it feel each time you transform someone into a totally different look? My goal is not ever to completely transform someone. People are very hard on themselves, and tend to only focus on hiding their flaws. Everyone has good features, and I always try to enhance them instead of changing someone or hiding them behind heavy makeup. When they look in the mirror after I’ve done their makeup, i get so much joy out of their reaction. Not because I’ve transformed them, but because I’ve amplified the beauty that is already there. What is the most amazing project you could imagen working on as an artist? Model, Photographer, Wardrobe and location? I have so many goals for my career, but ultimately I aspire to do cosmetic ad campaigns. I dream of one day doing a campaign for NARS with Francois Nars as the photographer and creative director. I love his product, and unconventional approach to beauty. Who did you look up to when you first started or even to this day? Kevyn Aucoin inspired me to become a makeup artist. When I was in high school, my older sister got one of his books for Christmas. I was amazed! It was like nothing I had ever seen. I’d never done makeup before, but I immediately knew that I wanted to become a makeup artist. After graduating high school, I loaded up my car and moved to California from my small hometown in Kentucky to start makeup school. I was trained by renowned beauty educator, Donna Mee at Empire Academy of Makeup. Kevyn used to refer people to her school who wanted to become a makeup artist. She has taught me so much as a makeup artist, and continues to be such an important person in my life. Who’s your favorite model? So hard to choose, but Jessica Stam has always been a favorite of mine. Her piercing eyes are so intensely beautiful. How many pieces are in your makeup kit? I honestly wouldn’t even begin to know where to guess! I would say I have a few hundred in my kit, but I own thousands. I could have my own special episode of Hoarders, “Beauty Addiction”.
