MAKEUP EXTRVAGANZA
interview with CATHRINE ASANOV
How important is it to focus on the
details of a single images to produce
quality material?
A
bsolutely vital! From every strand of hair to
every little micro-movement.
What made you want to become a
photographer?
The magic of the darkroom. It was like alchemy to me. I’ve always been inspired by
chemistry and fell in love with the organic
chemistry of art and photography.
What do you focus on mostly?
THE ART

Have you had any formal training in
this and if so where?
Yes- I started when I was 16 in Starkville, MS
in the darkroom and went to Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, France
and Atlanta.
What do you think photographers in
general focus on too much?
I
would focuses too much on other inspiration
of a certain look then copying that look. I tend
to not look at much inspiration and just let it
transpire from any and all elements of life.
What is the best thing about your work?

My name is Mykie and I’m a selftaught beauty and special effects
makeup artist from Philadelphia. Although I’m self-taught, my education
at Temple University’s film school
and my employment at MAC Cosmetics and Terror Behind the Walls have
really shaped me as an artist. After
surrounding myself with film, beauty,
and special effects in my college
years, I decided it was time to move to
Los Angeles and pursue a career in all
three areas.
Since moving to LA, I have worked
on several feature films, short films,
music videos and other events- but
the real game changer came when I
started posting my makeup work to
social media platforms. What started
as a challenge to myself, to post a different makeup look for 100 consecutive days, turned into a whole other
career opportunity that I hardly knew
existed. Now I spend 60 hours a week this and

What do you focus on mostly?
Definitely fashion and beauty photography. But it still might not be that obvious
yet, because, as I’ve mentioned, until two
years ago photography was still some
media with which I’ve experimented with
all different genres, until I realised in the
end that I’m definitely leaning towards
fashion photography. With it I grew affection towards post-production so I’ve
concentrated on that also… I believe it has
something to do with beautifying all those
people in the newspaper when I was a kid.
