The mortal instruments

by Mary Ann

Alec strolled down the long path to Magnus’s Brooklyn apartment. As he approached the door, Alec could hear Chairman Meow’s...well, meow. Though that cat annoyed the heck out of him, the Chairman was a part of his life now. Before his hand could reach the large wooden door it flew open. Magnus was always quick to tell when Alec was home. Alec smiled and pulled Magnus into a warm embrace.

Magnus exclaimed, “You're back! And not dead.”

Alec cracked a smile and said, “Obviously I'm alive.”

Magnus rolled his eyes and said, “Yes, yes. Now, we must go! Kaelie has the usual waiting for you at Taki’s.”

Alec dumped the contents of his duffle bag onto Magnus’s bed. He rushed out the door, following Magnus. He wasn't one for romantics, but didn't want to disappoint Magnus. After he had arrived home from Alicante he headed straight to the Institute. Izzy and Jace helped him lug the cheesy romantic classics, you know, flowers, chocolate, and a candlelit dinner in Central Park. Alec knew it was stupid, but hoped Magnus appreciated his effort. Hopefully our date won't get interrupted. Alec thought, as many of their dates had been. It was either demons or shadowhunters, plus the factor of Alec’s disapproving parents.

Alec sighed. He had yet to make peace with his parents. Their traditional ways clouded their love for Alec.

“So,” Alec said, looking at Magnus, “I know you wanted to go to Taki’s, but I kind of have a surprise for you. Close your eyes and let me lead you. Don't worry. I won't lead you into a death trap.”

Magnus laughed. “I trust you.”

He cautiously led him to Central Park, and within fifteen minutes they arrived. Alec slowed and stopped. He said nervously, “Okay, we're here.”

Magnus slowly opened his eyes. As he took in the scene around him his eyes widened. “Oh, Alec!” He breathed. “It's perfect! Ugh, I sound like such a girl.”

Alec smiles and the tealight candles spread around the table sparkle in his cocoa brown eyes. He gestured to the table and said, “Now all we have to do is hope that the faeries will leave us alone.”

“Oh, the queen is all bark. Let's just enjoy this gorgeous dinner and be thankful you've lasted almost two months without me killing you,” Magnus said, with a casual wave.

“I notice your glitter pants have hearts on them today,” Alec said, with a devious smirk on his face.

Magnus leaned in and whispered something in his ear.

“Now, now, let's spare the readers from the sappy stuff,” Alec said.

Magnus sighed, saying, “Oh, I suppose you're right, honey. That can wait.”

Alec looked at Magnus dubiously, “Honey?”

“What? I was just trying something new. Would you rather I whisper sweet nothings in your ear?”

Alec’s eyes shone. “Just enjoy the night, sweetheart.”
