With regards to the nature of
the work we do; a focus on
well-being
and
resilience,
health
promotion
and
prevention of illness is at the
heart of the New Zealand
Health Strategy. During the
consultation on the health
strategy we heard from many
of you that the NZ health
system is fragmented, focused
on service delivery not
necessarily on people, and
largely caters for people when
they turn up with an illness.
Many of you, provide care for
people who, for whatever
reason, were unable to live
well, stay well, get well (the
vision for the new NZHS). I’m
not suggesting that work with
people who are already ill is not
important. It most certainly is.
I am suggesting that something
has to change if we are going to
achieve the vision for the
strategy.

Individually and collectively we
need to be much more
assertive about developing
services
geared
towards
wellness
and
prevention.

So in conclusion; a resilient
health system is one that is
flexible, adaptable and willing
and able to learn. The vision of
the NZHS and the H&S Act
strikes to the very heart of that
vision; that all NZrs have the
