LOCAL Houston | The City Guide September 2017 - Page 4

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Welcome to my favorite issue of the year…the Food Issue of LOCAL Houston magazine! Our team of writers and photographers has captured the current (and future) food scene in all its delicious glory, starting with this month’s cover! Shot by Kennon Evett and styled by Keri Henry, it’s a rich and gorgeous tableau of some of our favorite foods from all around Houston. Now, on to what’s inside. Beth Levine gives us the rundown on what’s new and what’s next on the restaurant scene. Carlos Brandon sets off on two distinctly differ- ent tours: one of the local burger situation and the other diving into the poke craze. Janice Schindeler catches up with local food legend Chef John Sheely and checks out his latest venture, Lowbrow. And photographer Anthony Rathbun becomes a writer as well this month, when he shares his insider knowledge of good meals for $10 or less. As always, there’s all the art, style and community news you can eat. We even shot this month’s “Fat Finds“ inside the oyster bar at State of Grace, which was only fitting because Marzi is featuring fashion’s pearl trend. “Gish at the Movies,“ “Glasstireæ, Houston History Alliance are all here to round out the best of what’s happening this month. Look for LOCAL Houston magazine at your favorite restaurant, café or coffee place. And get ready for a satisfying read. Thank you all, BEHIND THE COVER Food, glorious food! This month’s cover was shot by Kennon Evett and styled by Keri Henry, with assistance from Emily Jaschke and Dragana Harris. Special thanks to Kimberly Park and Sabrina Miskelly of Kimberly Park Communications for providing mountains of food from Molina’s, Killen’s Barbecue and Seaside Poke (the Seaside chefs pre- pared the poke bowls onsite as well). It took a few hours of styling and teamwork to get everything right, but the results are decidedly delicious. 4 L O C A L | september 17 Tim Moloney editor-in-chief
