FOOD SOUTHERN SMOKE It’s our innate human nature to help one another… and to eat. Southern Smoke, CHRIS SHEPHERD’S brainchild, does just this. The story goes that when Shepherd heard that his good friend and former sommelier ANTONIO GIANOLA was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, his first reaction was to “throw a huge party and raise a ton of money.” And if you know Shepherd or have seen him in our pages, it’s not hard to imagine the big, burly chef saying and doing just that. On OCTOBER 11, Shepherd is hosting Southern Smoke, an event that will turn Underbelly, Hay Merchant and Blacksmith into a massive block party with the goal of raising at least $100,000 for MS. 1. Chris Shepherd Rest: Underbelly, Hay Merchant and Blacksmith The event will feature AARON FRANKLIN from Austin, the first pitmaster to win a James Beard Award, to serve his award-winning brisket from Franklin Barbecue; RODNEY SCOTT’S legendary whole hog South Carolina barbecue; and SEAN BROCK, the two-time James Beard award winner credited with reviving and preserving heritage foods in the South. This will also be the first event featuring the HOUBBQ Collective formed by local chefs – SETH SIEGEL-GARDNER, TERRENCE GALLIVAN, RYAN PERA, JUSTIN YU and CHRIS SHEPHERD. 5.
