AN OASIS IN A FOOD DESERT
HOPE FARMS FEEDS SOULS
RECIPE FOR SUCCESS FOUNDATION’S HOPE FARMS is growing fresh produce, community opportunities
and bright futures in the heart of Houston’s historic Sunnyside neighborhood.
Set on 7.3 sprawling, verdant acres at 10401 Scott St., the farm uses organic methods to generate signif-
icant food crops smack dab in the middle of one of the city’s largest food deserts, in view of Downtown’s
skyscrapers but seemingly a world away.
Hope Farms is a critical component in achieving Recipe for Success Foundation’s mission to change the way
children understand, appreciate and eat their food and to mobilize the community to provide healthier diets
for children.
The organization focuses on recruiting U.S. Veterans as farmer trainees. In addition to sustainable horticulture,
their training includes college-level courses in financial literacy, accounting, banking and business planning to
create and support new entrepreneurs as they establish and grow their own enterprises.
Hope Farms also hosts field trips for students to observe and participate in planting, cultivation, harvesting
and preparation of fresh food and operates a full schedule of community events to celebrate local food and
shared meals.
THE NEXT BIG COMMUNITY EVENT COMING UP? Earth Day weekend (April 21–22), with free family events
on Saturday (farm tours, arts and crafts, cooking classes, yoga, storytime, etc.) and a “Chefs in the Field”
dinner on Sunday night at 6.30pm with Peter Garcia, Greg Martin and Ryan Pera. Tickets and price informa-
