This exhibit continues the tradition, captur- ing the zeitgeist of the message in a bottle through American eyes. No single artist is featured, but the personal voices of everyday Americans are on display in this rare collec- tion of messages found in bottles along the Mississippi River and other U.S. rivers. Island Universe is a monumental installation of five hanging sculptures inspired by the multiverse scenario of eternal inflation, an extension of the big bang theory. Made of chromed metal, transparent handblown glass, and light, the structures are modeled on an iconic mid-century design object: the chande- liers of the Metropolitan Opera in New York made by J. & L. Lobmeyr in Vienna in 1965. Each sculpture pictures a different potential universe where their spheres represent clusters of galaxies and their lights evoke quasars – the brightest objects in the universe – all carefully placed according to measurements marking the history of time. The Contemporary Arts Museum Houston is pleased to present Christopher Knowles: In a Word. Christopher Knowles is regarded as a poet and painter, yet his output is broader than this suggests. This exhibition, his most comprehensive to date, spans many mediums – text, sound, painting, drawing, sculpture, and performance – including pieces mad e in collaboration with esteemed theater director Robert Wilson.
