FOOD | ARTS | COMMUNITY | STYLE+LEISURE TAKE IT OUT BACK Frank’s Backyard may be cooler than yours... Just saying, though we’ve probably never been to your backyard and love making broad brush assumptions. But, anyway, you like sports, don't you? Of course you do, you’re here right now reading our Sports Issue. You know who else likes sports? Frank’s Backyard, downtown Houston’s newest backyard for all to enjoy. Where’s this you ask? Well, you’ve likely been to Frank’s Pizza, serving slice after slice, pie after pie, on Travis St. for many many years. But now, right next door addressed at 413 Travis St, Frank’s Backyard has carved out that classic backyard feel amongst the skyscrapers using a creative mix of construction, existing build- ings and astroturf. You enter from the sidewalk right into the “backyard” por- tion with a healthy dose of Astroturf, fans, Adirondack chairs, picnic tables, fire pits and a TV on each side. Even a huge screen’s there for the pulling when the big, big game is on. Once the vines in the containers grow in, the backyard feel will be complete. Need some cover, or a drink? Step inside the “garage” where a vintage Airstream trailer is parked, now pristinely restored into a bar equipped with 40 glorious taps for draft beer and stocked full of bourbons, ryes and whiskeys. Looking for a different view, or perhaps more seating? Head upstairs to the balcony overlooking the whole backyard, with even more spots to watch the game on TV or all the people down below eating pizza. Told you it was a cool backyard. All these Rockets fans think so, too. During our two trips to the backyard, Frank’s basically became an after-game party full of jerseys and droves of downtowners alike. And since beer and pizza go together like beer and sports and backyards and all things good….ok, ok, ok, we’re back. Those 40 taps we spoke of? Well, they pour all the right things – local, national and international beers, ciders and even wine! Plenty of packaged beer, cold-brewed coffee and spir- its for your cocktails are available too if drafts ain’t your thing, but remember this is backyard themed, so no craft cocktails and shakers here. Just quick and friendly service of good drinks. Grab a slice or a whole pie from next door, and enjoy it in the backyard. Life is good in the backyard!
