LOCAL Houston | The City Guide MARCH 2016 | Page 6

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR BEHIND THE COVER Photography by Sofía van der Dys I BACK IN EARLY DECEMBER 2015, PHOTOGRAPHER MAX BURKHALTER SET UP SHOP AT HUNKY DORY TO PHOTOGRAPH HOUSTON TEXANS CORNERBACK KAREEM JACKSON FOR OUR MARCH SPORTS ISSUE. JACKSON DRESSED HIMSELF AND NAILED EVERY SHOT BURKHALTER SET UP FOR HIM. IT WAS UNDENIABLE IN THE EDIT ROOM THAT HE HAD TO BE OUR COVER. THANK YOU TO CHRIS CUSACK AT TREADSACK FOR ALLOWING LOCAL TO USE THE BEAUTIFUL LOCATION FOR OUR PHOTOSHOOT. des of March, March Madness, Forever Orange, Watt Just Happened, Fear the Beard, this is H-Town – and on and on. The slogans abound; Houston fans are loyal even in the face of defeat. With the Astros showing more promise than any other team in the league, March is showing some serious spring fever worthy of our fans. This city loves its teams and has built them stadiums worthy of envy dating back to the Oilers days at the Astrodome. Speaking of the Astrodome, did you know there’s a movement to document all the memories of the doomed dome to preserve it historically, at least? Holly Beretto writes about it on page 57. Kareem Jackson is on his seventh year with the Texans; our cover man sits down with Jayme Lamm to talk about his life. Behind the scenes, we talked to new managing partner of the Dynamo, Mexican businessman and entrepreneur Gabriel Brener. This man doesn’t like to lose; we are excited to see what he will do with the franchise. One of the largest sporting events in the nation, Final Four, descends in Houston April 2–4. Although we don’t know the teams who make the final cut at print time, read Jayme Lamm’s coverage on page 52. From sport-related event coverage, to the woman behind the Dynamo dancers, and even a former NBA point guard and Houston Rocket turned musician – LOCAL’s got your sports covered. Are you ready for Super Bowl 51?! February 5, 2017 – it’s going down in H-town. LOCAL is excited to show the nation what we’re made of. It might be too soon for coverage, but it’s not too soon to get excited. Holly Beretto wrote that piece for us. We also managed to not get it right in the article Getting It Right with Kelly Siegler. The name of her show on TNT is Cold Justice not Cold Case. We apologize.
