LET’S SHARE A FLIGHT AT BECKREW WINE HOUSE
Fried Calamari
I LOVE WINE. I THINK I MAY HAVE SAID SO PREVIOUSLY IN THIS SPACE ONCE OR
TWICE. I THINK I COULD ENJOY A CAB OR ZYN OR A PINOT NOIR WITH PRETTY
MUCH ANY MEAL. INCLUDING BREAKFAST. WELL, UNLESS I WAS HAVING CEREAL.
I savor it. After it passes my lips, I let it loiter a bit before ushering it down.
I want it to treat my tongue and my palate to all its loveliness.
Given my love of this wonderful gift from the gods, I thoroughly appreciate
places like Beckrew Wine House on West Alabama, just east of Kirby.
What’s nice, to me, is that it is designed not just to please your palate,
which it most certainly will, but also to inform and inspire your appreciation
of wine.

You will find quite a nice selection at very reasonable prices. But what I
really like are the wine flights. Three or four 3-ounce pours of different
wines, usually grouped in some theme. For example, The Alsatians were
four wines – a Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Riesling and a Sylvaner, all from the
Alsace region in eastern France.
Another one I tried was called Sideways, a nod to the delightful 2004 film
starring Paul Giamatti whose character had a love for Pinot Noir. So this
splendid quartet included Pinots from Oregon, California and Italy. It’s an
education, tasting and noting the subtle differences between each member
of the flight.
