ON OUR RADAR ROPING IN THE SCHOLARSHIP MONEY TEXAS STUDENTS REWARDED BY RODEO The educational future is bright for 423 Texas high school graduates who received $8.4 million in scholarships from the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. These college-bound seniors have their sights set on 39 different Texas universities and colleges and will major in 151 different fields of study. “These students are the leaders of tomorrow,” says Joel Cowley, HLSR presi- dent and CEO. “With the support of more than 33,000 volunteers, our gen- erous donors and those in the community who attend our show, we are proud to contribute to the education of these very deserving individuals.” The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is a Section 501(c)(3) charity that benefits youth, supports education and facilitates better agricultural practices through exhibitions and presentation. Since its beginning in 1932, HLSR has committed more than $430 million to the youth of Texas. Howdy and Obumneke Jiwuaku (scholarship recipient), courtesy of Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. HONORING HOUSTON’S MEXICAN HISTORY HERITAGE SOCIETY The Heritage Society has enlisted Orlando Sanchez and Christina Morales to co-chair a fundraising campaign that creates a major new artwork entitled Mexican-American Culture in 20th Century Houston. The artwork, a collaboration between highly esteemed artists Jesse Sifuentes and Laura Lopez Cano, will be a significant contribution to Houston’s growing catalogue of public art, and the process of painting the mural will be an event in itself since it will be painted in place at Sam Houston Park downtown. Themes include Mexican immigration as people fled the Revolution at home, the jobs that the new immigrants took on the railroads and in Ship Channel industries, and life in El Segundo Barrio. Key Hispanic figures will be includ- ed as well. Set against a backdrop of City Hall and the downtown skyline, this mural will be a cultural landmark and prime photo opportunity in the very heart of Houston.
