ON OUR RADAR MAN UP! SOREK OPENS IN EAST VILLAGE New storefront march 2018 Slated to open this upcoming March, Sorek looks to become the one-stop shop for the modern man in Houston. Sorek will pro- vide an approachable, yet fresh and sophisticated atmosphere that surpasses the trends of the traditional Prohibition-era barber shops that have seen a recent resurgence across the country. In addition to standard barber and grooming services, Sorek will offer a variety of high-end retail products: designer labels rang- ing from classic to more modern styles, as well as accessories, like jewelry, watches and more. The new storefront will be located at 2106 Dallas Street, Suite100. This location is within the burgeoning East Village development in the East Downtown neighborhood, which has seen an explosion of growth in the past few years www.sorek.co New Management and Menu PARK IT HERE KATY PRAIRIE CONSERVANCY BLOSSOMS WITH PARTNERS SOMETHING’S BREWING SIPHON COFFEE PERKS UP WITH NEW MANAGEMENT AND MENU Siphon Coffee owner Edward Treistman and new business partner Robert Taylor have announced that Norma Jean Odegard, a Seattle native and specialty coffee industry veteran, has taken the role of Manager at the busy Montrose neighborhood café. Odegard recently relocated to Houston after more than a decade managing high-volume cafes in Seattle. She says, “Montrose is a wonderful neighborhood, and Siphon is truly a gem of this town. I was drawn to Siphon from the first visit. The staff is passionate about coffee, eager to share their knowledge and they’re close – like a family, which made me feel accepted right away.” Treistman and Taylor are working closely with Odegard toward a renewed emphasis on quality, service and atmosphere. A newly upgraded patio with addi- tional seating and local artist mural, piano in a cozy lounge area and artwork from local artists on display in the café lobby are just some of the additions with the new direction Siphon Coffee is taking to create a warm and inviting environment. www.siphoncoffeehouston.com 14 L O C A L | 1 . 2018 The Katy Prairie Conservancy, The UT-MD Anderson Cancer Center and Asakura Robinson were recently awarded the Proud Partner Award from Keep Houston Beautiful at the 33rd Annual Mayor’s Proud Partners Luncheon. This award is given to organizations that have demonstrated a commitment to keeping Houston beautiful. The MD Anderson Prairie project was born in 2012 in response to the demolition of the Houston Main Building at the corner of Holcombe Boulevard and Fannin Street in the heart of the Texas Medical Center. The initial plan was to create a large lawn where the prairie current- ly sits. Dan Butterwick, a now retired Chief Architect with MD Anderson Cancer Center, instead envisioned a wildscape that would beautify the campus and reduce mowing and watering costs. The MD Anderson landscape and planning teams embraced and expanded this initial vision. Project leaders agreed to move forward with a 1.7-acre prairie restoration, creating a critical habitat in the mid- dle of the city for migratory birds, monarch butterflies and dwindling native bee populations. 1 . 2018 | L O C A L 15
