Vecino means neighbor, which is fitting because this Federally Qualified Health Center
was developed by a community of people who wanted a more healthy future. A group
of neighbors came together to shut down a cantina that plagued their neighborhood
with crime and turned it into a place where everyone could access high-quality health
care. Founded in 2001, Vecino has expanded into a medical, dental and mental health
care center for both adults and children in Denver Harbor – and a full-service medical,
dental and mental health clinic for children on Airline.
The clinics’ impact can be seen daily in the faces of those it serves, Houstonians who
previously didn’t have access to care. Before Vecino, many patients took their children
to the emergency room when they were ill, instead of seeing their family doctor – a costly and time-consuming method of care. Now, these neighbors enjoy a long relationship
with physicians who can care for their entire families and keep them healthy.
Vecino’s partnership with The Methodist Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program
brings top doctors to each clinic, offering patients the highest quality of care and giving
them access to everything they need to keep their families healthy.
