THE OPENING SHOT
In the spirit of ongoing evolution, we changed up our editorial calendar a bit this year;
one of the changes was a February Technology issue, so here we are. I hope you
enjoy it!
Most people think of California’s Silicon Valley, or New York’s Silicon Alley, or Boston’s
bio-tech communities when they think of U.S. hotspots of innovation. Not that I’m
comparing Houston to those places, because that‘s weak — we can certainly stand
on our own with a thriving tech scene that’s specifically Houston in nature. From the
Texas Medical Center to co-working facilities to business incubators and multinational
tech corporations, new ideas and innovation thrive in our fertile economy. In this issue,
you’ll meet the Houstonians who are writing the city’s next chapters with a combination
of dreams and hard work. As Carlos Brandon writes in “Future Proof,” today’s Houston
economy is a lot different and more diversified than ones past.
Speaking of writing, all your LOCAL favorites are here, as well as our photographers,
to bring you all the food, art, entertainment, style and community news you won’t find
anywhere else every month. Janice Schindeler takes us on a dining journey to Potente,
Sarah Gish takes us to the movies, and the Houston History Alliance takes us back in
time to when Compaq Computer Corporation was a sketch on a napkin at a House
of Pies restaurant.
