H
ow is it February already? Well, it is, ready or not. And this is our
People Issue. I know, you are thinking, “Wait, weren’t there like a ton of people on your
last cover?” Yes, but that was Houston A-Z and those people were meant to show you
how diverse and amazing this place we call home is.
Now we are introducing you to a bunch of new people doing some pretty phenomenal
things. From one of only three women pilots of a B-52 – who is an exemplary role
model for girls and really needs her own action figure (Hello, Mattel?) – to a mom of
three boys helping feed our children in food deserts. To a local child actor making his
dreams a reality on the fan-obsessed The Walking Dead whose season premier happens to be on Valentine’s Day. And more.
STYLIST LESLIE RIVAS WAS INSPIRED BY MAJOR’S INTEREST
IN ALL THINGS ANTIQUE AND VINTAGE SO SHE DRESSED
HIM IN A POLISHED, GRUNGY CHARLIE CHAPLIN WAY, AN
ENTERTAINER. HE GOT INTO THE CHAPLIN MOOD AS
SOON AS SHE GAVE HIM A BOWLER HAT TO WEAR. IN
THESE SHOTS HE’S PICKING SOME TUNES FROM LESLIE’S
IPHONE® ON HIS SOUND CLOUD. (HE COMPOSES HIS
OWN MUSIC WHICH WAS PLAYED THROUGHOUT THE
SHOOT.)
THE COVER WAS ONE OF MANY IDEAS, AND MAJOR WAS
AWESOME AT PHOTOPOSING AND WAS ABLE TO PUT
OUT SO MANY OPTIONS WITH JUST A CHAIR AND SOME
COOKIES.
MAKEUP ARTIST BIANCA LINETTE RIVAS WENT FOR A SLEEKER LOOK, OPPOSITE OF THE DRAMATIC BOWL HAIRCUT HE
IS KNOWN FOR ON THE WALKING DEAD.
GOOFING AROUND POST SHOOT. ASSISTANT PHOTOGRAPHER IN THE BIRD MASK; BIANCA, COLLIN, LESLIE AND
MAJOR HOLDING ONE OF COLLIN’S VINTAGE POLAROID
CAMERAS WHICH HAPPENS TO BE MAJOR’S FAVORITE
CAMERA, ONE HE DOESN’T HAVE IN HIS COLLECTION
JUST YET. COLLIN SHARES WITH MAJOR ABOUT THE WET
PLATE PROCESS AND SHOWS HIM HIS VINTAGE CAMERA
COLLECTION.
I am so inspired by the women in this issue, including one of the toughest women with
the kindest heart, former Texas prosecutor Kelly Siegler, who shares some words of wisdom.
Although our city keeps changing and evolving, some things remain the same and only
get richer, like this month’s “Where Are They Now.”
I am continually amazed at how little differentiates us from one another. We are all living
the same struggles, walking the same earth daily, trying to wring out the best it has to
offer us. And while I’ll continue to try and be the best person I can be, I look forward
to learning from all of you I encounter in my day-to-day reality, reminding myself to be
kind. We never know what the bank teller is going through or the cashier at the grocery
store or the editor at the magazine.
