26. SPACE CENTER HOUSTON
NASA’S INDEPENDENCE PLAZA OPENED LATE
LAST MONTH. The 240-ton complex will support the
159-ton shuttle carrier aircraft NASA 905 and the 80ton shuttle replica Independence. This will be the
world’s only shuttle mounted on a shuttle carrier aircraft allowing the public to enter both. Visitors can
enter Independence and experience how the astronauts piloted the orbiter through missions, see the
cramped living conditions of the mid-deck, walk out
into the payload bay to see an actual flown artifact
from STS-49 and enter shuttle carrier aircraft NASA
905, giving them a glimpse of the shuttle program
and all the challenges the bright minds working on it
had to overcome.
