On Monday, February 1, The Health Museum will debut a 12-foot-tall Giant Beating Heart just in time for Heart Health Month. Located in its newly renovated signature exhibit, The Amazing Body Gallery, the Giant Beating Heart is literally a heart attack waiting to happen. The threedimensional exhibit simulates normal heart functioning until, three times per hour, it gives guests an unexpected view of what happens to blood flow during a heart attack. 2. The Children’s Museum of Houston’s iconic Art Guys-created Telephone Man is now being surrounded by moving air ducts, fast-rolling balls and creative contraptions as the How Does It Work? exhibit has been refueled with an exciting new look and interactive activities. Encounter Amazing Airways, a 12-foot towering pneumatic tube system of air ducts and diverter boxes that will send objects traveling at high speeds up the entry wall to the gallery. Engineer a roller coaster using a 5-foot tower at Build Your Own Coaster! to understand kinetic energy conversions through creative problem-solving, cooperation and configuring of loops, twists and turns of the coaster tracks. Turn an abstract idea into a physical structure with Rig-ama-jig, completing the same creative process used by architects and engineers.. 3. On display February 2, Fariba Abedin’s large-scale, meticulous and gloriously colorful geometric paintings give the effect of looking into a giant kaleidoscope. Her work is inspired by ancient Persian architecture, poetry and calligraphy and explores geometric abstraction with an emphasis on color study. Although Abedin’s work is geometric and structural, it is also tender and appealing in its appreciation of nature, science and history. Her incorporation of Sufi poetry conveys a message of love and peace. 1. 32 L O C A L | february 16
