ART
SILOS
From Vancouver to Australia, massive silos are being used as a medium for art. In 2013, Aurora
Picture Show and the University of Houston Mitchell Center for the Arts presented the works of
Austin-based artist LUKE SAVISKY on four abandoned grain silos along Downtown’s East End. Most
recently, Washington Avenue Arts District Spring Street, Winter Street and Silver Street revealed
their latest ingenious sister studio: The Silos at Sawyer Yards. This little art commune is
believed to be the highest concentration of working artists in the state of Texas and home to over
250 studios – the Silos will be adding at least 50 more. This nontraditional 60,000sf. warehouse
features the 9,000sf. “Honeycomb” with the base of 83’ silos and a 27 interconnected circular
room along with 55 creative work spaces and 20,000sf. of space for buildouts destined for unique
galleries, retail, restaurants and events. The vision for this art commune is avant-garde and a gift
for the creative community in our city. It’s the perfect opportunity to acquaint yourself with local talent and embrace your artists.
70 new studios are slated to open in March 2016.
