This sold-out event was a huge suc- cess, raising the most money ever, with more than $870,000 in proceeds that will provide equipment and training for the Houston Police Department. The Houston Police Foundation is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) corporation formed by local business leaders to support projects of the Houston Police Department. Donations fund special programs, officer safety, training, equipment and new technology -- none of which would be feasible under the City budget. Photography by Michelle Watson, Catchlight Group More than 200 Steampunk aficionados traveled back in time October 27 when steam drove technological advancements at the Cheers to Your Health: STEAMPunk fundraiser at The Health Museum. Incredible costumes were on dis- play as guests mixed, mingled and explored the technology of wines, tonics and potions presented by Goody Goody Liquor and Beyond Bartending, sampled brews from Saint Arnold Brewery and feasted on decadent nibbles from Eddie V’s. STEAMpunk Fashion Models stole the show, along with a fun Cosplay Costume Contest. Proceeds raised during the event will support all STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) programming available for families and youth at The Health Museum. Photography provided by The Health Museum 72 L O C A L | 12 . 2017 The Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation’s Ladies for Literacy Guild, along with former First Lady Barbara Bush and luncheon chair Ginger Blanton, hosted the second annual Power of Literacy Luncheon on Tuesday, October 24, at River Oaks Country Club. This event shined a light on the importance of literacy as a top priority for the city. The Ladies for Literacy Guild also unveiled the Curiosity Cruiser, a 30-foot, custom-built library that will be donated to the Harris County Public Library. The event raised more than $350,000 to help support the Guild’s activities and initiatives, including providing relief to teachers and children affected by Hurricane Harvey. On October 21, Dress for Success Houston Co-Founder and President Nancy Levicki, event chairs Lindsay and Rand Holstead and Kelli Kickerillo and Todd Forester, and the organization’s supporters celebrated the 19th year of empower- ing women in the Houston community. The evening raised a successful $418,000. More than 400 foodies enjoyed an evening of celebration and fun, as they dined on gourmet cuisine at food stations throughout the building. This year's featured chefs and restaurants who donated their food, time and talent included: Rachael Volz, Paige Branam and Ryan Bouillet, A Fare Extraordinaire; Kelsey Hawkins, Arte Pizzeria; Claire Smith, Alice Blue and Canopy, and more.
