SHE’S GOT CANCER PATIENTS COVERED
NANCY RIVIERE WIGS OUT
If you look good, you feel good.
As we head into December’s festive season, Houstonians are, naturally, revving up for holiday revelry, getting their glitz and glam on, book-
ing hair and makeup appointments, naturally. Houston’s own “Mrs. Claus,” NANCY RIVIERE, is helping a particularly special group of
Houstonians look and feel their best, year-round – via her cancer/chemotherapy peer program, Wig Out.
Three cheers for this two-time cancer survivor and founder of Wig Out, who developed a Houston-based (free!) wig salon and consultancy that
provides complimentary wigs, mentoring and peer-to-peer guidance for women (and men) undergoing cancer treatment. “Losing your locks is
basically a ‘given’ during chemo, and the whole process takes a toll on your esteem and confidence,” says Riviere. “We’re here to help ladies
– and gents – retain a sense of normalcy and confidence during and after treatment.”
Riviere and her year-round elves obtain, clean, prep and style wigs and consult patients on wig- and self-care. Her Wig Out crew offers compli-
mentary hair and makeup lessons, as well as information about wellness maintenance throughout the treatment process. Wig Out has donated
more than 200 all-natural hair wigs this year, and has sites set on increasing outreach to care recipients, as well as wig donations.
Wig Out on Wheels, a mobile wig and wellness program, is in the works for 2018, and Riviere has plans to double down and focus on men’s
needs, as well. Want to help?
