FOOD | ARTS | COMMUNITY | STYLE+LEISURE CLUB | BAR | LOUNGE AND THE HOUSTON ASTROS ARE YOUR 2017 WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONS... That. Just. Happened!! Despite the wishes of Joe Buck (and seemingly most all of sports media), the Astros won. What a series!! What a team!! It’s hard not to like these guys: humble, hard-working, brothers through thick and thin. The kind of guys you’d like your sister to date. Heroes to our city. Bi-gg-io! Bi-gg-io! Bi-gg-io! Bi-gg-io! Biggio? (News flash, buddy: Biggio is now a Hall of Fame All-Star who is retired, living the dream working in the Astros front office.) Yeah, we’re aware. Sorry, we just broke out in chant, Minute Maid Park vintage Phil Gar- ner 2005 World Series-run-style while ordering a beer at the sprawling new sports bar, Biggio’s, in the new Marriott Marquis. It’s cool, right, because we were at the game when Biggio hit #3000 and sometimes we just break out in chant?! Anyway, the bartender didn’t even flinch (neither did the hundreds of other people in Biggio’s at the time); he just happily served us the Eureka Heights Mostly Harmless IPA we ordered in a nicely chilled shaker pint glass. Biggio’s is quite the sports bar. Sitting on the north edge of Avenida Houston, Biggio’s ground floor mixes window views of downtown Houston and Discov- ery Green with towering brick walls and TVs for miles high. There’s even more space on the second level, accessed by the massively wide stairs adorned by baseball murals, or of course an elevator. There’s also an awesome balcony on the second level with fantastic views of Downtown and Discovery Green. Sure, it is in a hotel, but it's tastefully decorated, including, of course, Biggio memorabilia. Overall it is appointed like a top-notch (sports) bar (think leather, reclaimed wood, power/usb outlets built into tables). And, there is seating of every type: bar stools, couches, theater-style chairs, private areas, tables, SRO, pretty much Biggio’s has the room. It’s huge. Clientele range from sports lovers, Downtown hoppers, convention visitors, hotel guests and anyone in between. Just like most things, it depends on the day. While the crowd depends on the day, Biggio’s bar pours 20+ draft beers including domestic and international big beer favorites, and a nice selection of local favorites too, including Saint Arnold (recent winner of the Great Amer- ican Beer Festival Mid-Size Brewing Company of the year) and EaDo all-star 8th Wonder Brewery, every day. Plenty of spirits line the back of the long bar, as well as some quality bottles of wine (think The Prisoner). Biggio’s also has a cocktail menu worth checking out, evidenced by us noticing quite a few of The New Palomas being mixed/served and because we’re a sucker for a good paloma, we tried one too ... it’s batting 1.000. Next time you’re out for the big game, Biggio’s should be in your pennant race.
