THE MENIL COLLECTION Find your center at the world-renowned Menil Collection, and the adjacent Rothko Chapel, which both serve as places to inspire creativity and personal reflection. Inside the Menil, you’ll find the personal collections of John and Dominique de Menil, who single-handedly put the Houston art scene on the map internationally. On any given day, you’ll also find peo- ple relaxing, reading, picnicking and playing games on the lawns surrounding this jewel of a museum. The Rothko Chapel is a non-denominational chapel that serves not only as a chapel, but also as a major work of modern art. On its walls are14 black but color-hued paintings by Mark Rothko. The shape of the building, an octagon inscribed in a Greek cross, and the design of the chapel were largely influenced by the artist. It is a center for international cultural, religious and philo- sophical exchanges. It’s also a place of private prayer for individuals of all faiths. www.menil.org Map Illustration by Sebastian Gomez de la Torre april 17 | L O C A L 7
