“Curvy Brides”
Reality-TV Stars
Written by Karen Stewart Ross
About seven years ago, when Yukia Walker, a self-proclaimed “curvy
girl” and co-star of TLC’s “Curvy Brides,” got engaged to the man of
her dreams, it was supposed to be the happiest time of her life and it
was-until she started shopping for her wedding dress.
At the time, she was a size 14 with a large bosom and says she
couldn’t fit “anything” in the stores. She calls it the worst shopping
experience ever.
“My sister ended up having to try on all the gowns for me. We
have two different body types and it was just a disaster of a dress.
I was so unhappy with my wedding dress, I spent the day with my
breasts very exposed and just uncomfortable,” said Yukia. “And we
really didn’t want that to happen to any other bride so we started
Curvaceous Couture.”
Curvaceous Couture is designer bridal boutique based in Columbia,
Maryland that specializes in meeting the needs of plus-size clientele,
a traditionally underserved group. Bridal gowns, according to
Yukia, who co-stars on the boutique’s reality-t.v. show with her
sister and best friend, Yunesia, traditionally run two to three sizes
too small. But that wasn’t the only problem. That was just the tip
of the iceberg.
