Essential Oil Spotlight DR. DAVID K. HILL, DC Executive Vice President, Chief Medical Officer/Chairman, Scientific Advisory Committee I am loving the skin-supporting benefits of Copaiba, but what else can I use it for? Copaiba is a truly powerful essential oil and the research continues to pour in about its amazing benefits. I’m particularly interested in recent research focusing on the many ways it can positively influence health when taken internally. As far as the scope of health-supporting benefits, it is similar to Frankincense in that it supports the proper function of nearly every body system. As the most plentiful essential oil source of Beta-Caryophyllene, it can have some profound effects on the endocannabinoid system and in supporting healthy cell growth, but it doesn’t end there.* For daily support of the cardiovascular, immune, digestive, nervous, and respiratory systems, and for a dose of antioxidant protection, I recommend adding 1–2 drops of Copaiba to a glass of water or Veggie Cap every morning with breakfast. There is even some fascinating recent experimental research suggesting internal use may help support uterine health.* It is one of those oils that you should integrate into your daily routine for optimum health. What resources are available for me to learn how I can expand my use of essential oils for self-care? There are two distinct components to expanding your functional knowledge of essential oils: research and experience. We are all distinct in how we react to exogenous input. Despite the science, you may have better (or worse, or simply different) experiences with specific oils than others. So use them and develop your own model of daily use based upon your experiences. At dōTERRA, we are proud to be the science leaders in the essential oil industry and we’ve created some amazing educational and usage tools, such as the Oil Chemistry Wheel. Soon we will be releasing a major expansion of the wheel, which will be the ultimate essential oil user’s guide. Keep checking the dōTERRA Science Blog (doterra.com/US/en/blog-science) for further information. We’ve all heard the maxims about Frankincense being good for everything. What’s a health benefit of Frankincense that most may not be aware of? When in doubt…you know the rest. Frankincense really is good for almost anything, and the research is beginning to catch up with my experience. It’s my go-to oil for internal use to support overall wellness, topically for skin health, and aromatically it promotes relaxation and focus. You may be surprised to learn about its uses around the home and in ways it can positively influence components of health that you don’t generally think of. Experimental research has shown that Frankincense has pretty powerful cleansing properties, one that is effective on everything from teeth to surfaces. Add a drop to your toothpaste or water and use as a mouth rinse, or add a few drops to your all-purpose cleaner for those tough kitchen and bathroom messes. 4 / WINTER 2018 LIVING MAGAZINE * These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration.
