chiropractic services Chiropractor comes from the Greek word “Chiropraktikos” meaning “done by hand”. Chiropractic is the health care discipline based on the scientific premise that the body is a self-regulating, self-healing organism. These important functions are controlled by the central nervous system (the brain and spinal cord) and the nerves that travel from the spinal cord to all organs and peripheral regions of the body. The practise of Chiropractic focuses on the relationship between structure (primarily the spine, pelvis and peripheral joints) and function (as coordinated by the nervous system) and how that relationship affects the preservation and restoration of health. Chiropractors regularly treat the following conditions: back and pelvic pain, neck pain, headaches and migraines, joint discomfort, sciatic pain and many other musculoskeletal complaints. The pain that a patient feels when they consult a Chiropractor may be due to acute trauma or incident but more commonly is associated with a long term postural imbalance. Over time these imbalances lead to abnormal loading of spinal joints and a breakdown of structural integrity. The spine becomes less able to cope with the demands of our modern lifestyles and injury occurs. A properly aligned and moving spine is essential to optimal health! A 1998 study found a statistically significant relationship between the degree of a person’s low back curve (lumbar lordosis) and the incidence of chronic lower back 10 pain. The authors found that a L1 to L5 ratio of less than 36 degrees was a predictor of chronic back pain. Simply put, if a person has a decrease in the lumbar lordosis (a flattening of their lower back) they are statistically more likely to suffer from chronic lower back pain. Many studies show similar results for other spinal regions. Sub optimal spinal alignment in turn leads to premature osteoarthritic changes in the spine leading to pain and decreased motion. Chiropractic offers gentle, safe and effective treatment for everyone from young children to pregnant women and retirees. After patients are fully examined the typical Chiropractic treatment involves one or more of the following: soft tissue mobilization, dry needling and spinal adjustments and mobilizations. We utilize a variety of adjustment techniques from low-force instrument adjusting, drop table and traditional Chiropractic adjustments. The treatments will be individually tailored for you. We also utilize rehabilitation exercises and spinal orthotics to help promote normal spinal alignment and function. Make an appointment to get your spine assessed at Lotus Wellbeing Centre today. Yes we help many patients in need of acute care for back and neck problems but we also focus on preventative assessment and care. Our goal is to age gracefully-not prematurely! 11
