The Day My Father Died by Yawa Eklo It was a Saturday morning, October 10, 2009. My father was 55 years old. I was 11 years old. I have three brothers and one sister. We lived in Lome, Togo. My father had returned from the hospital, and I was in the living room watching TV with my cousin when I heard the voice of my father. I rushed to go tell him, welcome, Daddy, but when I arrived, I noticed that he was feeling bad and he told me to call my uncle. A few minutes later my uncle came and took him to the hospital. In the evening, my uncle came back and he looked sad. He told us our father died. I called my mother and told her husband because she didn’t live at home when that happened. My siblings and I cried all night. I can’t forget that day and I miss him very much. 22
