ENGLISH 7 level RESTAURANT CHEF by Galina Al-Mukhtaar I remember when I started to work at the restaurant as a dishwasher. At the beginning I didn’t talk to the chefs, because I wasn’t comfortable talking with them. I only spoke if they asked me questions about the dishes or trays, like if they are clean or not. One day the top chef asked me if I can help in the kitchen to prepare the food. They had so many orders and they didn’t have any help. So I said “Sure , no problem’’ I asked “What do you want me to do“? She told me since you don’t have any experiences in the kitchen, you can start with cutting the onions, peppers, and potatoes. So I told her that I can do more than cut vegetables. She gave me a long look then asked what else I can do in the kitchen? I explained that while I was washing the dishes I basically learned how to cook from her. She was surprised to hear that and was not really convinced that I can cook like her. She gave me a chance, so I started cooking. She was very impressed with my skills in the kitchen. She asked the boss to put me as her second hand chef. I was very happy and of course, I got paid more. It doesn’t matter where you work. If that is what you want to do for a living, you should stick with it. Of course you need to work harder than ever to achieve your goal. One advice I can give you is: study hard, work hard, and you’ll always succeed. Cooking in the kitchen as a chef is not as easy as washing the dishes. As a chef, you have more responsibilities than washing dishes. The food has to be cooked on time and ready to serve. The chef always needs to be on time as an example to the others who work with him or her. Sometimes it can be stressful but, as a chef you have to control yourself and always speak in a mannered tone. A collection of student art and writing 55
