ENGLISH Country thevs BY Nicole N o ub i ss i e City B oth country and city life have some good and some bad. I will write about the comparison. When I first came to the United States in 2010, I had an uncomfortable life because I had no idea about how to live in the city. Second I hadn’t spoken or understood English although it was a dream for me. Some people I met here gave me advice to begin English school and directed me to Carlos Rosario School. I have been learning English for 2 years. I was frustrated when people spoke English because I couldn’t communicate with people in English. In addition, now that my English got much better I began to find out that the city has a lot of opportunities. I can have two jobs, I am a bilingual, and I have been to see the White House. I have flown to Las Vegas, and I have ridden the metro. My country was easy, but I couldn’t have had as many opportunities. Finally I have accepted the sacrifice to push myself because I want to achieve my goals and thank you for all employees at Carlos Rosario School. These are some of the reasons why the city is better than the country. I will tell a story about a family and the changes they had to make to immigrate to the United States. Juan and Maria are the characters in this story. They are from Central America and they had been married for five years. During this time they had two children: a boy and a girl. However, their economic situation had not been good. Most of the time, they did not have money to cover the bills and one day Juan made the decision to move to United States with his sister. Juan’s sister lived in New York but she had been having troubles with her job. She had a part time job and she did not have enough money to support her family. She told him how hard it is to live in the United States and that it was impossible to help him to come to this country. Even so, he replied “I will go there as soon as I can”. After a difficult crossing for a month, he met his sister in New York. In the past, he did not understand how to communicate in English, so he decided to take English as Second Language classes in a local school. Since Juan has been studying English as Second Language classes, he improved his English enormously. He had the opportunity to get a better job and thanks to his skills and experiences, he obtained a manager position. After being promoted, he decided to bring his wife and children to the United States. Nowadays, they live together and happily. Finally, Juan’s family greatly improved because now they have jobs, education, money, insurance, a new language, new culture and most importantly they are a happy family. Juan says, “I made the right decision when I decided to come to the United States”. 35
