The Process of Creating
In Our Own Words
The Carlos Rosario School literary-arts magazine
is an original collection of adult basic education
students’ writing and art. This collection came
out of an initiative to increase student reading
and access to high-interest reading material in
2008. Our annual publication is produced by
a student editor, trained on Adobe InDesign
CS5, with teacher support. All students are
encouraged to submit their best work through a
school-wide multilingual campaign, resulting in
over 1,000 submissions annually!
Through rounds of review, the student editor
selects which submissions to include in the
magazine and collaborates with the teacher
advisor on all aspects of the magazine
production, including layout, design, promotion
and distribution. We are proud of In Our Own
Words for its contribution to the community of
adult learners and for capturing the multicultural,
adult learner perspective and spirit.
