Yes, We Can! By Juan Benitez Price AM Level 7 “Yes, we can.” This is a great phrase. It is the phrase that President Barack Obama used during his campaign for the presidency. He promised us immigration reform but nothing has happened yet. Now, I would like to tell you a story. Let’s pretend that I am telling this story in front of the President and the U.S. Congress. I will ask everybody to please close your eyes. This is a story about millions of people living in this country. This is about a hardworking man who works nine to eleven hours every day to get some money to buy food for his family. This is about a five year old girl whose parents are taken and put in jail like criminals. This is about a smart student who cannot go to college and who sees his or her dreams frustrated because he or she does not have a green card. Now, can you see them? I would like you to open your eyes. Mr. President, can you imagine that you are that man or that the little girl is your daughter? Now, all of you, don’t you think immigration reform would be fair? Now, it is our time to say, “Yes, we can.” Victory will belong to those who believe the most. We will believe. 7
