My Student Government and Leadership Experience
By Elizabeth Castro
leader of the group picked their own
group. For example, the group who
was going to work in the kitchen was
asked to bring or buy food. Another
group made flyers. A third group contacted different institutions. My
group was asked to make phone calls to
different government offices, including: The Public Library, the D. C Public
Recreation, Catholic Charities, Latino
Affairs, and the YMCA.
This experience was very rewarding. I went to different meetings
of NCLR (National Hispanic Caucus) at
the National Captiol, to speak with
Eleanor Holmes Norton and her representative, and other places that I
really enjoyed. Not only did I make
good friends but, overall, it was a very
good experience.
I learned a
lot of things
when I participated in
the Student
Government
and Leadership Program
for 2008 and
2009. It was
a good and rewarding experience. I
learned to be: a good leader, to work
with a group of Carlos Rosario students, to communicate and share
ideas, and to work to make these ideas
come true.
A good leader is the person who
works well with people, listens to others, respects their ideas and respects
people. Working with a group of Carlos Rosario‟s students and the staff of
the Student Government was amazing.
It was special being with students
from different cultures, nationalities
and backgrounds. Many people had
different points of view and ideas.
We got along very well. When
the time came for us to vote on an
event for us to work on, everybody was
impartial, thinking only the best for
the Carlos Rosario students.
Once an idea was chosen, the
