My Student Government and Leadership Experience By Elizabeth Castro leader of the group picked their own group. For example, the group who was going to work in the kitchen was asked to bring or buy food. Another group made flyers. A third group contacted different institutions. My group was asked to make phone calls to different government offices, including: The Public Library, the D. C Public Recreation, Catholic Charities, Latino Affairs, and the YMCA. This experience was very rewarding. I went to different meetings of NCLR (National Hispanic Caucus) at the National Captiol, to speak with Eleanor Holmes Norton and her representative, and other places that I really enjoyed. Not only did I make good friends but, overall, it was a very good experience. I learned a lot of things when I participated in the Student Government and Leadership Program for 2008 and 2009. It was a good and rewarding experience. I learned to be: a good leader, to work with a group of Carlos Rosario students, to communicate and share ideas, and to work to make these ideas come true. A good leader is the person who works well with people, listens to others, respects their ideas and respects people. Working with a group of Carlos Rosario‟s students and the staff of the Student Government was amazing. It was special being with students from different cultures, nationalities and backgrounds. Many people had different points of view and ideas. We got along very well. When the time came for us to vote on an event for us to work on, everybody was impartial, thinking only the best for the Carlos Rosario students.
