years now, reckons, “I like the
sign and will preserve it under
my new signage, how can
it be a bad thing to let me
advertise my own business,
when the ‘Miami Surf Designs’
shop hasn’t been here in 25
years, which is about the age
of the sign.”
The location has held some of
the industry’s best creations
over the years, and was once
the go-to place to find the
best surfboards on the coast. It
hosted the famous Hohensee

surf shop through the 1970s
before later being transformed
into Miami Surf Designs by Martyn
Sonia. But these days it’s the
highly respected and established
Skate Museum that lines its walls
with boards of a different kind.
With no intention of either
showcasing, nor losing the
artwork, Mark has assured us that
he’s keen to protect it under the
new facade of his shopfront,
and that he hopes one day
some other renovation will again
expose the artwork for all the
nostalgic gawkers and history
buffs to go Instagram crazy over.

We decided to give the artwork
our own ‘Heritage listing’ by
painstakingly restoring the image
using Photoshop - 5 hours later we
had digitally removed 7 buckets
of gap sealant, builders glue and
25 years of gritty dirt to reveal the
original painting as best as can
be seen - Turn the page to see it!
