VICIOUS LEFTS
#1
Snapper Rocks
T
raditionally not thought of as a city full of
great lefts, the Gold Coast is considered
a natural footer’s dream with an array of right
point breaks and thumping right beachies. The
predominant winds and swells only fuel this,
however this stretch of coastline harbours a
secret. Woven into the fabric of the traditional
natural foot theme is a selection of lesserknown vicious lefts peppered from one end of
the coast to the other - if you ever take them
on, beware. They have been know to bite!
Here’s our top five, in no particular order.
First off the rank is the fleeting Snapper left
- a ‘sometimes’ sand bank that forms every
now and then right in the middle of the point,
running reverse straight into the Little Mali
bay. Known for being supremely vicious, she
does more damage than reward with three out
of four waves ending in a slamming closeout.
Thick, often mutating but no less alluring and
with a beauty of her own, she has been known
to also spit out some of the squarest ride-ofa-lifetimes for a select few lucky punters who
have survived the drop in years gone by.
