RUNNER UP DAMIEN HEALY North End Boardriders
What’s the single fin comp at Burleigh all
about in your own opinion?
“For me (and all the North End boys) it simply
comes down to fun! We all really want to do
well and make heats so we can surf the point
with a only few other guys but mostly we just
want to all be there as a club and have as
much fun as we can.
“We have a rule that as soon as one of the
NEB boys gets knocked out then that’s when
the beers are on and sadly this year Tex got
knocked in Heat two so that’s when the fun
starts haha. I also really think that it is the
best surfing event in the country at one of
the best places on Earth, so we’ll be coming
back for as long as they’ll let us.”
Some have said you consistently have the
biggest hack in the whole comp, throwing

more than buckets - what’s the secret to
your vicious carves on a single fin?
“The single fin is always on a few weeks
after the Christmas silly season so I am
probably carrying a few extra kilos of fun so
that probably helps with the spray haha, but
I seriously think that my surfing suits single
fins as it is all about top to bottom simple rail
work and just old school basic power surfing
and that’s always been what I’ve been into
... so that could be why I’ve enjoyed some
success at the comp over the years.”
North End Vs Burleigh for the final place,
but you got pipped by Thomas - how’d it
feel to do so well and just miss the prize?
Will it be something you will set your
sights on again next year?
“After the final I knew I was right there and
that it was going to be the tiniest margin
between Thomas and myself, so to be so
close is fantastic but then it is that whole
bitter-sweet thing, and I’m like ‘oh man can’t
I just win it for once’ hahaha.
