RUNNER UP DAMIEN HEALY North End Boardriders What’s the single fin comp at Burleigh all about in your own opinion? “For me (and all the North End boys) it simply comes down to fun! We all really want to do well and make heats so we can surf the point with a only few other guys but mostly we just want to all be there as a club and have as much fun as we can. “We have a rule that as soon as one of the NEB boys gets knocked out then that’s when the beers are on and sadly this year Tex got knocked in Heat two so that’s when the fun starts haha. I also really think that it is the best surfing event in the country at one of the best places on Earth, so we’ll be coming back for as long as they’ll let us.” Some have said you consistently have the biggest hack in the whole comp, throwing LiQUiFY | 82 more than buckets - what’s the secret to your vicious carves on a single fin? “The single fin is always on a few weeks after the Christmas silly season so I am probably carrying a few extra kilos of fun so that probably helps with the spray haha, but I seriously think that my surfing suits single fins as it is all about top to bottom simple rail work and just old school basic power surfing and that’s always been what I’ve been into ... so that could be why I’ve enjoyed some success at the comp over the years.” North End Vs Burleigh for the final place, but you got pipped by Thomas - how’d it feel to do so well and just miss the prize? Will it be something you will set your sights on again next year? “After the final I knew I was right there and that it was going to be the tiniest margin between Thomas and myself, so to be so close is fantastic but then it is that whole bitter-sweet thing, and I’m like ‘oh man can’t I just win it for once’ hahaha.
