Pro surfing returned to Burleigh Heads late in January for the first ever WSL (formerly the ASP) contest in Australian history and the event didn’t fail to impress, attracting some big hitting surfers despite the modest prize pool. Qualifying points seemed to be as valuable or more than prize money and the competition was intense despite the average conditions. Mitch Crews lights up the point in a pre-heat session // Photo Wilba | Sun Mud Dominating throughout the event following his first year on the Championship Tour, Gold Coaster Mitch Crews took the title over local favourite and perennial Burleigh surfing legend Jay ‘Bottle’ Thompson. In the women’s Dimity Stoyle cleared her rivals and pocketed $2000 for her handy work. Great to see companies like Vissla and Scoot getting down for supporting this event, which was built on the skeleten of the former Breaka Pro. Can’t wait to see them score waves for this in the coming years - the 21st century version of the Stubbies is back!
