If it ends up looking like this and costing just a couple of bucks per ride, it will change the surfing dynamic forever // Picture Webber Wave Pools The developers of the proposed $90 million, 24ha environmentally sustainable water park and tourist accommodation development announced last week they were expecting to commence Stage One construction within 12 months, following the Sunshine Coast Council approving the MCU application on January 29 this year. But there are more council approvals needed and growing concerns over flood mitigation and adverse impact on the area. The world-class waterpark concept has been aptly named Sunshine Park, and is set to feature a large wave pool for surfing designed by Webber Wave Pools, along with waterslides and other water-based activities, accommodation for tourists and a function centre, restaurants, retail outlets and onsite parking. The development by Waterplay Pty Ltd would be one of the biggest developments in the Sunshine Coast region’s recent history.
