LANE WAY LOTS AT LANEWAY It’s the cool little festival that always seems to pack a punch much bigger than you expect, and this year looks to be no different for The Laneway Festival 2014. To begin with, it’s already miles ahead over last year’s because the organisers have been able to secure a curfew extension to midnight for the January 31st event at RNA Showgrounds in Fortitude Valley. That means most of the bands will now perform after 5pm, avoiding much of the ol’ sunsquintitus syndrome that can ruin a solid set. Acts include Lorde, Time’s Teenager of the Year, Vance Joy, Danny Brown, CHVRCHES, The Jezabels, Cloud Control and Adalita, who the oldies will have seen sweating it out over the years as frontwoman for Magic Dirt, and released quite a cool melodic rock album in September called All Day Venus through Liberation Music. We could tell you about this track and those grunge references and that chordal progression, but it’s probably best if you hear Adalita’s personal take on it really … “This record is really about so many things but mainly I think it’s about growing up. I think I came to a point as an adult where I realised a lot of new things about myself mainly through the transformative nature of romantic love gone wrong. In tandem with this theme I was also very drawn to beautiful images of the female form, flowers, fountains and waterways presided over by a female figure, sometimes young and innocent, sometimes a dark, powerful huntress. For me this relates to the mystery of the feminine and the sacred nature of beauty.” Yep, no way we could have come up with that! Festival tickets are $126 including booking fee, and available at http://www.moshtix.com. au/v2/event/st-jeromes-laneway-festivalbrisbane/68271 FROTH | Page 95
