Churn and burn - a great day’s mackerel fishing awaits and we have to be back in time for golf! It’s high
speed, sudden turns, no life jackets and little regard - some of the boats FROTH witnessed crossing the bar
this day clearly had no interest in maritime laws let alone the multitude of surfcraft in the immediate area
He is also dubious about the effects of the
educational part of the campaign.
“They don’t really understand that people
aren’t affiliated within neat little organisations.
They have to learn to be innovative to deal
properly with surfers – that’s exactly the key
point - they don’t understand the recreational
surfer, which is the majority. There are no
statistics, but a lot of people say they’ve never
been in a boardriders club
or competed in any type
of competition, so they are
not in a group that can
book a session.
“Again
similarly
with
boaties, if they are waiting
to get a call from clubs to get educated then
I think they’ll be waiting a long time – it’s not
really an ideal way to reach people with the
message.”
Dan is however more positive about the
installation of the surveillance cameras,
saying they are a critical component of the
campaign and agreeing with the sentiments
of Hal Morris.
“I think if people know they’ll get caught, then
you will see an improvement in behaviours,”
says Dan adding , “People need to understand
the law – there is a lot of misunderstanding
about the law in the boating community
really, so I think the cameras need to be a
permanent thing.
