N IO SH FA SPELL BOUND for summer Interview and words | Rachel Syers Gijima Jacket $590 with Chief Shorts $310 This is what you get when you cross traditional African voodoo with a Bondi Beach babe – a spellbinding look for summer. The Va Va Voodoo collection from the label Caslazur by Cassie Snelgar came about from the designer’s fascination with her African heritage, mixed with her love off the beach since moving to Bondi. The result is a mix of slouchy silk surf wear and athletic leather pieces with the style of a glamour girl on her way out, made even more appealing with hand finishes using a combination of old world craftsmanship and contemporary design. The results made FROTH want to explore a little more ... So Cassie, this combo of beach and voodoo - did you come up with that one night over a wine? “It was something which happened organically (but yes, wine is always involved). I’ve had a fascination with Voodoo ever since I was little. I grew up in South Africa where our gardener was a Sangoma so I was exposed to the macabre rituals of bone throwing and lucky potions from a very young age. Living in Sydney, I was completely inspired by my new surroundings but I felt that the dark mysticism of Voodoo would bring in an element of glamour and depth to the collection. In a way this collection was a hybrid of my old life in South Africa and my new life in Sydney.” FROTH | Page 50 Was the beach part of what drew you to live at Bondi?
