few weeks earlier, and how the singer Mark
launched off the speaker stack head first into
me leaving him with a concussion and cut
cheek, and me with a rotund egg on my right
temple, seeing me leave the show covered in
lumps and bruises. Kram tells me “Jesus! I hope
you did the interview before that man, not
after.” He agrees that that’s how it used to be
… “Yeah totally, you leave the show and really
feel like you’ve done something. But I think a
lot of that changed, and rightly so, after what
happened (to Jessica Michalik) with Limp Bizkit
at the Big Day Out, you probably remember, it
had just started to get ... the problem with that
sort of craziness is, if there’s anyone in there
that doesn’t want to be a part of it and they
get stuck, it’s really hard to get ‘em out.
"Once I jumped off stage at the Big Day Out
in Sydney, and I went into the mosh pit, and
I just couldn’t believe it. It was the hottest,
like steaming throng of ... I thought I was in a
nest of vipers - it was so full on. The first thing I
wanted to do was get out.”
With the band back in the spotlight again, I
ask Kram about the focus on their music, like
how having your creations appear in films
and surf videos and on video games is good
for the band, or how it can also allow others
to perhaps ride on the back of Spiderbait’s
success. "It’s a great way to get your music out
there, especially in places like America or the
UK where we don’t tour as much ... if it’s put in
a good spot, and it’s a good film, it’s fantastic
... it’s still a bit hit and miss, I know not all bands
are into doing that, but we’re really open to it
and some of our songs are really suited to it - if
it’s not a positive - like it could sometimes be if
the movie wasn’t very good or badly placed
- you can still fix that up with one appearance
or one interview. They can get to know who
you are pretty quickly if they’re willing to take
the time to get to know you."
Surely Kram’s outward personality would easily
beat down any rumours or comments that
might be flying around? “That’s kind of our
whole thing, and me personally, whether I’m
doing TV or if I’m on the radio, or news or I’m
jumping into the ocean which is funny … I made
the Gold Coast news last week for jumping in
