me. With Straight Through The Sun, the guy is
just straight going for it, very defiant and kind
of just exploding into action, whereas there’s a
lonely sort of quality to the same action that’s
being commented on in Supersonic - so I really
tried to work on a lot of lyrical interplay during
the record, and I think that came out really
good."
Kram is showing his depth and connection to
his new creation now … all pretty deep stuff.
He doesn’t deny it, saying - “I know, it’s trippy.
We did the record with Franc (François Tétaz)
who works with Gotye and Bertie Blackman
and Kimbra, and lyrics were a massive part of
his whole thing and he said, ‘Really work on
it, I really want you to explain where you’re
coming from with these songs’.
"Once I started doing that I started going
deeper, and even with songs like Reach
For The Sky, which on the surface is just this
banging heavy metal track, the lyrics are
about ambition and about someone that’s
willing to sacrifice anything and anyone to
get what he wants, and it’s actually a bit of an
evil song and the character is sort of obsessed
with himself ... Franc was really good about
bringing that out of you. I sort of try and think a
bit more poetically these days about my lyrics
than I maybe once did.”
Kram gets chatting about the live show
element, and how it’s changed over the
years, and how the crowds have as well, like
it’s not as rough as it used to be. He reflects
on how people used to climb the giant poles
inside the big top festival tents, and then slide
down on the outside - one guy in particular
at Splendour In The Grass made it down and
didn’t get arrested - “... then he jumped
