CCS Mission: Key Strategy #3

from the Desk of the Head of School

AN INTERVIEW WITH A CCS ALUMNA

Kari (McCavanagh) Olson, CLASS OF 1991

The CCS mission is "to engage and educate young people to know Christ and be equipped to impact the world for God's Kingdom." CCS employs five key strategies to aid in accomplishing the mission. The third key strategy is to partner with parents to assist them in educating their children.

The responsibility to raise each child is expressly given by God to each child's parents. The family is a divinely established institution, as is the church. Each of these institutions was designed by God to reflect the perfect relationship of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Schools--public and private, secular and Christian--are partnership tools for families to use in their pursuit to fulfill their God-given responsibilities.

Cornerstone understands the significance of the privilege of being

invited into this

educational

partnership. CCS is not designed to serve as a substitute for parents; instead, CCS is designed to reinforce the teachings and values of Christian parents while equipping students to become engaged members of their local churches for the purpose of impacting the world for Jesus.

CCS understands how important it is for the school to know and articulate clearly to parents what CCS can bring into this precious partnership. This enables the school to accomplish its mission alongside each family that desires what CCS offers. Two-way communication--including parent surveys--helps the school evaluate its effectiveness in fulfilling the mission.

Kari Olson remembers the Cornerstone Christian School from its earliest days. In fact, she was a member of the charter class when CCS first opened its doors in 1981! Prior to that, Kari had attended the public school through Grade 2. Kari’s mother, Nancy, was disappointed in the public school system, which was teaching secular humanism to her children, and she wanted an alternative. Nancy learned that Neale and Gladie McLain planned to establish a school that upheld her Christian faith, so she enrolled Kari and her brothers when Cornerstone's doors first opened.

Kari loved her time at Cornerstone! She thrived in the small environment, and she appreciated her God-centered education where “teachers prayed for and loved on her.” She was also able to develop strong relationships with her classmates, many of whom are now life-long friends. Being nurtured in this type of environment made it feel like she was surrounded by family. Kari also appreciated the opportunity to interact with all kinds of people, even those she wouldn’t normally

have

gravitated

towards.

She

believes

this has served her well in life as she has learned to forge relationships with those who are different than her.

After graduating in 1991 (as the second graduating class of CCS), Kari attended Eastern Nazarene College (ENC) in Quicy, MA. She remained there for 1 ½ years before deciding to move home
