GOD’S GLORY in MATHEMATICS

by Brian Sullivan

1 Corinthians 10:31 says, “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” Can someone bring God glory by doing math? Absolutely, yes! On Friday, March 15, 21 Cornerstone Christian School students were given the opportunity to honor God by taking part in the 2018-2019 Math Olympics held at Trinity Christian School in Windsor, CT. You may be asking, “What is the Math Olympics?” It is a regional event that ACSI promotes all over the country, in different states and regions, which invites students in Grades 3-8 to take four different timed math tests. They compete against students from other Christian schools in the same grades while performing two different types of tests: computation and reasoning. It has always been a fun event where CCS students work hard in math and enjoy time with each other and with students from the other schools.

Before the event, our CCS students prepare for the Math

Olympics in specific practices. They review concepts that they will need to know in order to do their best on the day of Math Olympics. They also practice taking timed tests. Unfortunately, two CCS students became ill and could not participate, but the other 21 students honored the Lord by doing their very best on the tests and by being polite while waiting for the results. They had time to fellowship together while eating lunch, playing games, and talking. During the awards ceremony, CCS had 17 of the 21 students place in the top five of their grades and test categories. We certainly praised the Lord for His grace and blessing upon the students throughout the day.

After the awards ceremony, we completed the incredible day by going to McDonald’s for drinks, shakes, and ice cream. It was also another wonderful opportunity to honor the Lord by being a light for His kingdom right there in the restaurant, surrounded by numerous other people including the workers.

The Math Olympics has taken place at Trinity Christian School for many years now. Unfortunately, Trinity is closing its doors so this will be the last year for the Math Olympics to be held at their school. If this is the last Math Olympics event that CCS is involved in, we know that our students did their best and lived out 1 Corinthians 10:31 by bringing God glory in whatever they do--including math!

March is the longest school month. There are no long weekends, and we are cooped up in cold weather. It is often a difficult month with little excitement on the horizon.

Pi's first three digits are 3,

1, and 4; so, on 3/14, we

celebrate the number pi.

Students look forward to

this event every year.

While the number tao is

more useful and a bit more

interesting, the number pi

is also used throughout

God's Creation, and its

digits fall during a month

we could use a fun

distraction. Schools and

businesses across the

world celebrate this day.

At CCS we have a Pi-Off. Our Pi-Off has several categories in which students and faculty can compete. The memorization category works similarly to a spelling bee and involves individuals reciting digits of pi from memory. We also have a pie baking competition, a “Cookie Face Race” and

creative categories in which individuals and teams compete in presenting skits, songs, artistic representations of pi, biblical integration, and more.

We had wonderful participation this year! For the digits category, Zayana Medina won with 108 digits of pi! Jonathan Morhardt won the creative category for his pi jokes. Sage

Yoreo and Isabelle Tirado-Rivera won for their pie baking skills and Gabe Sullivan won the “Cookie Face Race”. Great job to everyone who participated!

Pi Day
