meaningful relationships.
“Many young women with intellectual disability or
ASD feel isolated within their communities and struggle to
find their place in society due to poor self-image, lack of
confidence and difficulty making and maintaining meaningful
relationships,” Minda social worker Kaye Kay says.
“The ‘I am Woman’ and ‘Girl Power’ programs facilitate
clo
self-knowledge, emotional acceptance and personal growth
and development by assisting women to learn new skills, so
they can connect with and contribute to their community,
grow in their own positive self-awareness and confidence as
well as and build networks and friendships.”
‘Girl Power’ helps guide young women in building

healthy, safe and positive relationships with themselves, the
people around them and the communities in which they
live,” Kaye says.
“The workshops include various fun, interactive
activities in an environment that builds social connections
and relationships with peers, and includes a final evaluation
providing a report outlining learning outcomes and
recommendations to the carer and NDIS.”
Minda staff are also developing a similar program for
younger men, aged 13 to 17 years called ‘Becoming Men’
and ‘I am Man’ for ages 18 to 35 years.
