Junior Perspective “Comparison is the Thief of Joy” By Ethan Freund, NALJA ex-officio NALJA Board of Directors President: Randa Taylor, TX [email protected] 817-504-6927 Vice President: Dominic Ruppert, IL [email protected] 217-254-2558 Secretary: Hannah Ziegler, OH [email protected] 419-618-2441 Treasurer: Lindsey Gulotta, LA [email protected] 985-351-7674 Ex-Officio: Ethan Freund, CO Great quote by Teddy Roosevelt, remember that for later. But first, some of what I learned as a NALJA board member, a call to action, and then we finish off with a fact. one. Everyone does something better than you. two. Consistency over talent. You might be the most talented person in the world, but if you don’t consistently put in the work to back that up – you will get passed by. three. Don’t stop working when the work is done. It’s what every Gatorade commercial ever has said “While you sleep, they get better blah blah hydration.” But it’s true. To be the best at something you have to keep working after the lights go off and the cows are fed. Be absolutely relentless. Director: Aaron Linhart, IA four. You are responsible for your own time. We don’t have a say over everything in our lives…EXCEPT, how we use our time wisely. Just like J.G. Wentworth says, “It’s your time, use it how you need to.” Director: Callie Hicks, KY five. Accept constructive criticism. I cannot express how important this one is, but on a scale of 1-10 it’s like a 10.863. Simply put, if you can’t accept a critique, how will you ever get better? Taking Ownership. Own and cherish your victories, your “dubs,” so that you remember what it feels like so that you want to get back there. More importantly, take ownership of your failures and mistakes. If not to the public, but to yourself. No opinion matters more than your own. If you learn to accept and deal with your failures and mistakes, then you will become a better version of you, seven. Your ego is your enemy. (refer to #1) Sometimes said as “get over yourself.” Which might be too harsh, but it is true. Your idea, your plan, your calf, might not always be the best. But don’t let yourself get hung up on that – just move on in the effort to be the best. [email protected] 918-704-2397 Staff Advisor: Katie Campbell [email protected] 913-683-1415 LIMOUSIN Today | 27
