Award of Excellence Scholarship Up to 3, $750 scholarships were awarded to support Limousin enthusiasts that have proven excellence in Limousin activities as well as leadership skills demonstrated in NALJA, 4-H, FFA, and other endeavors. They are selected based on their hands-on experience shown by a detailed report of management practices used within the applicant’s own herd as well as their ability to set and achieve worthy goals. Alexa Montagne, Elk Point, S.D., and Chase Ratliff, Westphalia, Kan., were presented with the 2018 Award of Excellence Scholarship. Congratulations! Dick O’Brien Memorial Junior Herdsman Award This year’s Dick O’Brien Herdsman of Year was nominated by a friend of the O’Brien family. In her nomination letter she said, “being friends with the Dick O’Brien family, I know Alexa Montagne, Elk Point, S.D., and Chase Ratliff, Westphalia, Kan., were presented with the 2018 Award of Excellence Scholarship. that it would be a great honor for them to have this individual receive this award.” Kenneth Campbell of Tonganoxie, Kan., was this year’s recipient of the Dick O’Brian Memorial Junior Herdsman Award. Kenneth is a very respectable young man who loves the Limousin breed. Not only has his family been a part of this breed for many years, but they are hardworking, great people. He has always done his own work and has done a tremendous job at it. When he is at a show he is a responsible individual, hardworking, and a friend to many. Kenneth is known to be in the show barn at 11 p.m. at night and then wake up early in the morning to take care of his animals before going to his full-time job. As a junior who’s aging out, his helpful attitude and his humor will be missed around the barns and in the staff office, but we know this won’t be the last we see of him. Congratulations, Kenny! The Dick O’Brian Herdsman of the Year was Kenneth Campbell, Tonganoxie, Kan. LIMOUSIN Today | 51
