His 1967 win was one for
the memory banks.
“I got pulled into last place,”
he says. “I wasn’t mad, but I
couldn’t figure out what I had
done wrong. I kept on showing
my steer and thinking about
what I must have messed
up to be put in last place.”
Come to find out, judges
placed Peterson last in the
group to see how he would
handle the disappointment.
Peterson’s eyes twinkle as
he says, “I can still see Art
Handel [a showmanship judge
and renowned cattleman]
walking toward me, then
saying, ‘Get over there in first
where you belong. We’ve
been working to get you to
quit, but you keep showing.’
That was pretty special.”
Continuing Traditions
Each of Rod and wife Wendy’s
three sons also competed at
Western Junior. Earning top
showman honors at different
stages was something each boy
enjoyed. The couple’s eldest son,
Chisum, captured champion
senior showman honors in 1992.
As the boys and their families
grew, so did the tradition.
In 2017, the Petersons’
granddaughter Delaney
(parents Chisum and Cindy)
and grandson Memphis

represented the third
generation of Western Junior
Livestock Show exhibitors.
