One of the things Monet said was “Every time you look at a good work of art you should see something new”. So, naturally, I was devastated, came back to England, stopped producing that type of painting, destroyed a lot of them, some of which I would consider redoing now, and painted landscapes in a pointillist style for a year.

What is the best piece of advice you have ever been given?

Back in Art College was a tutor taking away our black paint and telling us, “Mixing with black kills your painting”. Also: work from life and don't be frightened by comments from passers-by.

What is the best piece of advice you can give?

Don't be, or try to be a ‘professional’ artist. It is a very selfish vocation and those close to you will go without and make many sacrifices in order for you to follow your dream. Also, don't mix with black!

Where do you find ideas for your sculptures?

I find ideas everywhere. I can't keep up with them. From watching dancers, to a sentence someone might say. They pop up all the time. Then nag me for attention.

What would be your dream project?

My dream project would be the Fourth Plinth. I have several ideas for that. Most of the pieces chosen seem to be from sculptors avoiding hard work. I would work my socks off.

What is the most indispensable item in your studio or workshop?

My hands. I can't seem to work without them!

What couldn’t you live without?

Oh dear! What a question. A sense of humour.

What would surprise people the most about you?

I haven't a clue. I am pretty boring really. No surprises, as long as you can dance.
