Lighting schemes are generally designed around a few key aspects, ambiance, task, feature, glare, intensity, direction, control in many instances this is a function of the light source and there are any number of lamps available to you. However when selecting the luminaire to carry the lamp of your choice you should be aware that not all luminaires are created equal and you should be considering other factors • • 42 Identity do the bathroom downlights look like all the other downlights in the installation? Often IP65, fire rated, emergency and standard downlights will have different appearance. Survivability will the fitting survive a lamp change, can you change the lamp at all? An increasing trend is to integrate the lamp into the fitting reducing the lamp choices available to you. • Impact does the ceiling have acne? Serried ranks of down lights look awful? • Durability will time change the colour of the fitting? Will springs fail over time? We have all seen downlight that are slightly askew following a lamp change because of the downlights poor/cheap construction. • • Reliability does the fitting have an independent test certificate? If not! why not the onus is on you to select reliable tested products. Invisibility can you hide an unwanted lighting position? can you paint fitting to match the ceiling? Changes in a room can often lead to unwanted luinaires can you blank them out? • Maintainability does a lamp change involve employing tradesmen? Even the best LED lamps fail eventually can your client change the lamp? The worst cases involve an electrician, plasterer and decorator and a simple end of life lamp failure can incur considerable costs. • Flexibility can the fitting be morphed into something else? Can you change a downlight to a pendent or a spotlight or PIR sensor?
